Our mudguards follow the shape of the originals almost exactly, even down to having the correct width of centre rib, which varied over the years. They are ready to bolt straight on, having all the right brackets and most of the holes, just needing a coat of paint to finish them off; but do a trial fit before painting, as some minor adjustment may be required. The centre bridge piece is left loose rather than riveted, as it is easier to fit. The de-Luxe models usually had a valenced mudguard (including the Square Four up to 1953) and the Red Hunters the plain version, although either could be fitted to order. Note that a spacer is fitted between the right leg of the front stay and the forks to provide clearance for the front brake rod, which passes inboard of the stay, not outside.

We try to keep the more popular mudguards in stock but as demand is high and there is only one man bashing bits of tin in his shed there may be a long wait, especially for some of the less common mudguards. Virtually all mudguards from 1926-58 are available, which is more than can be said for many more popular makes.

The 1946-50 mudguard used a ‘U’ shaped front stay and separate centre stay. In 1951, the front stay was altered to 2 tubular stays and the centre stay was made integral with the blade. The 1955 version reverted to a separate centre stay, although the cable clip was now on the mudguard instead of on the stay. 1956 saw the centre stay altered again for the new forks and a new design of mudguard with deep valances but without front stays was used for 1957-58. All types have a front stand, the 1956-58 pivots on 2 distance pieces instead of directly on the bolts. All front mudguards have a centre rib except the last type which is plain but with deeply valenced sides.

The front number plate started as a plain steel one mounted on 2 clips as for the girder fork models. It was superseded by a cast aluminium one with rubber beading under it in 1951. A revised version in 1953 had a steel centre with an aluminium surround and different beading. Although we do not make the 1953 type number plate, we do have the beading! We only make the earlier number plate as there is little between these last two as regards appearance but the earlier one is much easier to make.

You are welcome to ask for a complete assembly to suit your Ariel in which case we will work out all the bits and pieces for you.

+1951-54 valenced front mudguard was originally made with an integral centre stay but as they are very prone to cracking, just like the factory, we will supply the later version:- Order 4734-51 and we will send mudguard 4732-55 and a separate centre stay H46-46.
* We cannot find anyone in the UK to make these mudguards for anything like a reasonable price and the Indian supplier of cheap ones is difficult to persuade to actually make anything! We can supply good quality glass fibre versions that won’t rot and are undetectable in use, reference 4703-57GF.
