Wheel Types 8 & 9 – 3 Stud QD Rear, 1935-40, Rigid & Plunger

A completely new design of rear wheel appeared for the 1935 season, it was only ever offered as an option and is therefore fairly rare and usually only found on the more expensive bikes. Usually known as the ‘3 stud QD’ to differentiate it from the later ones that use 5 and then 4 studs to hold the brake drum to the hub. Punctures were much more common in days of yore due to nails from horse shoes littering the streets, unmade roads and no minimum tread limit so anything that sped up the process of removing and re-fitting the wheel was welcomed.
A sketch showing the layout of the components of this wheel is available to download here.

1935 No studs! The brake drum was held on only by the spindle, drive was via 12 pegs. Steel brake plate with riveted in fulcrum adjuster, shoes 1” wide. Bolt on sprocket and brake operating parts are from the standard fixed wheel, brake reaction is by lug on the frame into a slot in the brake plate. Ariel claimed it took less than a minute to remove, using one spanner.

1936-37 Three of the drive pegs replaced by studs and nuts. Shorter brake cam, torque arm replaces lug on frame.

1938-40 Brake shoes increased to 1 1/8” wide, fixed spindle modified. Plunger version uses a different spindle and fittings and right hand snail cam adjuster is different to the ones used on the fixed type.

Type 8 is the rigid version; Type 9 is the plunger version
