What Oil Should I Use? We recommend that engines with roller bearing big ends be run on monograde oils i.e. single viscosity sae 40 in winter and sae 50 in summer. This is because this type of oil can withstand the high loads experienced in a roller bearing big end where all the force is through just one or two rollers. Monograde oils should not be confused with ‘straight’ oils, which means oil without additives. The principle additive in modern oils is a detergent that is used to keep deposits in suspension until they reach the oil filter. They will also loosen existing deposits and as there is no effective filter this can be disastrous in an engine that is full of ‘grunge’ accumulated over the years. Engines with shell bearing big ends, i.e. Fieldmaster, Huntmaster and Square Four, can use either a monograde or modern multigrade oil. Multigrade oil will lubricate the shells more quickly when the engine is first started which is when most of the wear takes place and so is more suitable for short journeys; it is also cheaper and more easily obtainable. Monograde oil will leak less; the engine will run cooler and quieter, is available as straight oil and is more original!

Do not run a Square Four engine that has not been run for some time unless it has either been rebuilt or has always had regular oil changes. The problem is that the sludge in the oil will solidify in the long oil ways causing them to become blocked. This frequently has the result that the engine seizes sometimes breaking connecting rods in the process. A good indication of the state of the oil system can be obtained by draining the oil tank and determining how much sludge is in sitting in the bottom by poking around with a stick.

Do not forget to clean out the oil tank when rebuilding the engine.

The well known Draganfly Cartridge Oil Filter Kit is the best modification that can be made to an Ariel, especially those fitted with plain shell bearings such as the Square Four, Fieldmaster and Huntmaster Twins. Engine life will be improved and when used with modern oils, oil change intervals can be increased by at least 50%. The filter must be fitted in the return line so that the pump will push the oil through; it will not draw it through the feed line as oil is supplied to the engine by gravity. The filters incorporate a bypass valve so that circulation is unaffected should the filter become blocked.

The kits are complete with full instructions and all parts required including a cartridge filter. They also include a specially produced mounting bracket that attaches to the bottom of the rear engine plate between the engine and gearbox, this results in an installation that is not visible but  with a readily accessible filter. All parts are available separately as spares or for other applications or positions. The filter head has 2 off 3/8 diameter plain connections that will take 5/16” bore pipe
