Instrument panel & fittings

The first instrument panels were oval and fitted to the 4F and Slopers only; they were fitted with a brass trouble light retained by a loose threaded ring. The shape was altered in 1932 to the familiar triangular shape and by 1933 was to be found on all models. The trouble light was retained by two spring loaded pins from 1932 and in 1939 changed to a bayonet type of fitting and the material changed from brass to Bakelite. The introduction of Chronometric speedometers in 1946 caused a change in the shape of the mounting hole, which became circular. There are many variations including ignition cut out switch for the 4F and 4G, sometimes they were made without provision for the 8-day clock and early ones were always painted, the Red Hunters had chrome ones before they were fitted to the de-Luxes. The trouble lamps were always finished in black, never polished brass.

These instrument panels are un-plated as there are several variants and depending on the instruments to be fitted some holes may need to be added or modified. The hole for the speedometer hole needs to be elongated to suit the PA speedometer (the hole is correct for Chronometric); the holes for the 8 day clock and cut out switch to be added as required. A template for the holes is supplied.

All the above gauges are excellent quality copies; the 5160-94 is a cheaper alternative to 5160-46 which although it is also an excellent copy the movement is from 5 o’clock to 7 o’clock instead of the correct 7 o’clock to 11 o’clock. All gauges are supplied without pipe fittings. These oil gauges have non-original mountings and so are awkward to fit in 1951 onwards petrol tanks – some ingenuity required (OK a lot).
Oil pressure gauge pipes – From 1931 to 1935 the bottom end of the lower pipe had a fitting that screwed into the timing chest; in 1936 this was altered to a banjo fitting. Models without a rocker feed pipe had a 2-piece pipe with a join under the petrol tank while models with a feed to the rocker box took the feed to the oil gauge from the rocker feed pipe, see section 5. Some of the early gauges had a female fitting for the pipe, later gauges and the modern replacements have a male fitting; all our pipes are supplied to suit the male fitting, versions for the earlier version are available on request.
