Primary chaincase & screws

See notes under gearbox section (click here) regarding the change to 1956 swinging arm machines if problems are experienced with primary chain alignment. There is not, and never was a gasket under the clutch dome, except for the late W/NG models with the steel primary cases. Nor was there ever any kind of seal behind the clutch; oil is prevented from leaving by a lip around the hole and by the fact that the clutch runs very close to this lip. The competition models did have 2 large felt washers fitted between the inner primary case and the gearbox sprocket to prevent the ingress of mud and water into the chaincase.
Ariel did not specify which case screws went where, so there is an element of trial and error! If you are looking for clutch dome screws only, we have determined they are these – For Singles and twins 3 of 041 and 1 of 017 (from 1936 onwards). For Square Fours 4 of 041 1937-58
